The Gospel of John
Text:
John 1:30-34
John the Baptist demonstrates that his entire ministry is one of self-abasement.
John's explanation of his own ministry demonstrates the essence of a biblical prophet. His ministry was focused on One greater than himself. He delivered a knowledge that was not of himself as part of a mission which he himself had not determined. His recognition of the Spirit's descent on Christ demonstrated that he had a perception beyond any capacity within himself. Ultimately he was a witness to the greatness of another. His deference - even awe - towards Christ is a lesson and a warning to us all, to treat Jesus Christ with the reverence which He deserves.
