Saul's First Failure

In chapter 13 of I Samuel we get our first clear picture of a Kingdom Prophet. Here for the first time the prophet confronted the king with his sin and pronounced God's judgment on the kingdom. Saul's error seems slight to us - under extreme stress and in the absence of the prophet he took matters in his own hands - but to God it was not a small thing. Saul demonstrated his lack of faith, and it fell to Samuel to denounce him and pronounce God's rejection of him.
