I Samuel 4:12-22
The Catastrophe that Overcame Israel
As Eli waited for word from the battle, he had to know that Israel would be defeated. He had heard through two prophets that his sons would die. Yet his heart was trembling for the Ark, which never should have gone to battle. Eli's state of mind shows that he had repented of his earlier sin: he now prefered God over his sons. He and his daughter-in-law both understood the real tragedy of that day. God's glory had departed from Israel in response to their sin.
